I have no idea what caused that. That isn't the worst of it. Although the
blinken lights on the router were not firing up (no internet traffic
involved), I saw numbers as high as 1,059. Switching back to it from a kvm, I
came back to a screen that sported only a static background and a mouse
cursor. NO menus (KDE on Mandrake 9.0).

Last night, while I still had a GUI to work with, 'top' didn't tell me what
was wrong and I'm not nearly enough of a guru to know all the ways of finding
out what program has gotten its knickers in a loop in a loop in a loop so I,
reluctantly, (and VERY slowly) switched to a CLI terminal, logged in and
powered down. It took nearly 10 minutes just to shut down.

As you can see from the .sig below, all is sane again. For the moment.
