I do it transparently with mine, so that from the outside you can do
ssh my.router's.ip.address -l user
and log into my machine, which is behind the router. My router (USR 8054)
calls it a "virtual server" (~like the server lives on the router); in
effect it's port forwarding. I have the router forward all packets to
port 22 to 192.168.1.11 . This works for ssh, scp, or anything tunneled
through ssh (X, for instance).
