[SLUG] single vs. dual

What are some general thoughts about dual processors vs single in a
workstation? For instance, dual Opteron 242 @ 1.6 GHz vs a single
Athlon64 FX @ 3 GHz (if one was available and the prices were similar)?
On the one hand, if you have many cpu-bound processes/threads, the smp
machine effectively has 3.2GHz of processing power with double the cache
of the uniprocessor, but OTOH, any single process/thread can only leverage
1.6GHz and 1MB of cache for itself.

Just rambling and looking for input.
