The share names I used were too long for '98 to recognize them. When I
shortened them all went well.

I cannot thank you enough for the tireless help you have given me.

Older versions of Windows have limitations with share names. Can you
try defining a printer share name <= 12 characters without spaces and
see if that makes a difference to w98? For example, try copying this
printer share but name the new one just AcctLex.

Also, from the redhat box, try:
smbclient //localhost/"AcctLex Printer" -U username -c queue

and see if any errors are reported. Replace username with the name
the laptop would be authenticating with, and you might need to replace
localhost with the NETBIOS name of the samba server.
