I've seen this happen in other O/S's when one tries to use a Logitech-based
driver on a Microsoft mouse or vice versa ...

Sounds like a PS/2 mouse losing sync (or whatever it does wrong). What
type of mouse/trackball do you have? What type does XFree86 think it is?
