My 2 cents as an old IT guy:

SCO Unix cost me about $1200 a few years ago. CPM/86 cost about $800.
HP-UX cost
me several grand (forgot the exact price). All of today's OS's are huge
bargains.

At www.zipzoomfly.com you can get the OEM version of
Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000 (my pick) for $129.99.
You have to buy hardware to get that price, but that's the
only time I change the OS. Yes, it's cheaper then the upgrade. Odd...

No, it is certainly not the bargain Linux is, but not really that expensive.
Not when I paid $400 for my UPGRADE to Macromedia Studio MX, or $500 for my
UPGRADE to Adobe Studio CS. So far, they don't offer Linux versions...

Having said all of that, I believe OpenBSD is a huge bargain. Rather than
compare it to WinXP/2K or Linux (both can't compare to BSD's security),
compare
it to high-end firewalls costing >$10,000. It's worth buying just to keep
those
guys working on the project. It's simply the best overall firewall I know
of.

A new copy of Windows XP Professional is $269.99 at Amazon.com (the upgrade
version is $179.99).

And if it comes with OpenOffice, consider that you saved yourself the
$412.99 it would cost you on Amazon.com for a new copy of Office 2003
Professional (which, by the way includes neither FrontPage '03, which costs
another $165.99, nor OneNote, which costs an additional $167.99).

And Micro$chmuck thinks they have a better ROI? Which is better ROI --
$1,088 (which would be the cost of the above plus 7% Sales Tax) or $45?
