With an internal modem you have to eyeball for dip switches to set the IRQ/COM
port combinations. If they aren't there, treat it as if it was a Winmodem (as
it almost certainly is) and put it back on the shelf.

I'm planning on moving my Dad over to Linux in the near future (he's just now,
at age 77, decided to give computers a try). I'm biding my time until he
decides to get DSL / Cable so I don't have to deal with this stuff. He's
already disgusted with AOL, so that's a good start. :-) Not only can I set
Linux up to look and, for the most part, act like Windows, but I can do most
of the administration remotely if he's on a 24/7 pipe. Right now I can only
shout words of encouragement over the phone at him as he wrestles with Win98
/ AOL. If I can get him on Linux, I can handle the dirty work in the
background while he plays Tuxracer, surfs dictionary.com and handles his
email in the foreground.

Idle thoughts, I guess.

Bill
