Note to all/self: Assigning OpenOffice sounds from /opt to system events using gnome-sound-manager is a bad idea. I just spent an hour strace-ing gnome-settings-daemon only to find that mmap2() was failing due to that file.
Not sure exactly why this deserves bandwidth, but it could be useful to someone in the future.
