Because I wasn't looking in the right place.

A guy on MDLUG got it. Don't feel bad. IIRC Steve Campbell is a developer with
the Mozilla-Firefox project. I imagine he eats and breathes this stuff.

In his own words:

This doesn't and it takes a long time:
    telnet cannaday.us 443

If the packet got through then we would get an immediate response,
either a web page or a closed port. Since we got neither I strongly
suspect this is a firewall issue."

Encuraged by his response, I took a fresh look at the NAT section of my
firewall and, sure enough, there was a typo in the firewall. I had NAT'd 443
to a computer that doesn't exist on my network.

Thanks for the responses, guys and yes, I'm looking at CA's starting in just a
couple of minutes.
