For your second item, I've had that exact same error message when I upgrade
kernels sometimes. Basically, you just need to reboot and you won't see that
message anymore. There's something that goes on between that first and
subsequent boots, but I don't know what it is.
If that doesn't work, make sure that you are part of the sound group.
For the first item (sorry this is in reverse order), it sounds like your
console drivers aren't operational. I have this problem on my powermac. 2.4.x
kernels work okay, but not the 2.6.x ones.
