[SLUG] xterm vs. high-bit characters

I have a problem with xterm. It won't display high-bit characters (á, ç
and so on) if I type them (pine shows "[ Unknown Command ]", bash beeps),
but will if I paste them in via the mouse. rxvt works fine. $TERM is
"xterm" in both cases. I have these resources:

*font: -*-lucidatypewriter-medium-*-*-*-25-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*
*boldfont: -*-lucidatypewriter-bold-*-*-*-25-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*

XFontSel indicates that specifies only one font.

I recently re-installed RedHat 8, so that's most likely when the problem
started. trn runs in an xterm, so all high-bit characters in news show up
as blanks. If I copy and paste them, they come through as "?". At least
they did before I changed "*" to "iso8859" in the font name; haven't tried
it since.

What do I need to add/chamge?
