   As I recall, thin net uses RG-58/U (thinner than a pencil)
and thick net uses RG-8/U thick as my little finger.

   Thin net uses "BNC" connectors. Thick net uses "N" connectors.

   I have never seen a NIC card with "N" connectors
As a HAM I use "N" connectors daily.
