You can ask to have the modem set up either as a DHCP (which is the
default) or if you have a private IP address, have the private IP address
as the Wide Area Network (WAN) address and have an RFC 1918 address as the
LAN address. Allows you to set up your network as you please.

These options were in effect last year when I had Verizon. If they have
changed, you can get a DSL account from ij.net and they will offer you
configuration as you desire.
