Maybe not poor design. In an enterprise environment, we still isolate
Symantec's Ghost's multicasting to a separate private net off the router and
on another switched segment--which is what I think you want (not a router).

When you say "very old," I'll bet that's not a switch at all and probably a
hub. It doesn't take much for collisions bring down a network on a hub.
