Now understand you _can_ use Track-At-Once (TAO) like DAO for
"recording" (character) as well. In fact, that's typically how I do my
DVD-R _data_ discs.
It works completely with buffer underrun, just writes the ISO9660 Yellow
Book track, etc...

It's just that you can't use DAO for "packet writing" (block). TAO and,
I believe Session-At-Once (SAO) as well, can use either devices. Of
course, most consumer players do _not_ like multi-session discs, or
anything that doesn't "close" the disc as a single session.

I can't tell if it's the character v. block access, or the way DVD-R is
written by Sony/Philips v. DVD Consortium firmware, but the latter has
been far more compatible for me with older drives. In those cases, I
have _only_ used byte-by-byte "recording" character with DAO/TAO.

The exception being, of course, when I use DVD-RAM, which is a direct
block access with an entirely different command set.
