I must confess that it seems that all five (5) of my spare 1.44 floppys
are junk, thats what I get for keeping this stuff around. I broke down
and bought a new floppy, used a new cable and everything works.

Time to clear out the boxes of stuff in my back room and invest some
money in new hardware. Thanks to everyone who offered advice or tried
to help.
