Two-player co-op was/is one of my favorite ways to play Quake2 as
well. But it tends to be overlooked in first person shooters because
everybody wants deathmatch.

IMO the audio really defines the atmosphere, at least in the first
section - partly because everything's so dark, and partly because the
sound effects team really did a great job.
