Fdisk mbr may fix your hard disk booting.
Disks I have used to install if they find the old Linux may offer to
boot installed
system.
If you want to save data I would put in another drive as master and make
you old
one slave. You may have to leave the old drive unplugged while you
install the OS
on the new one. After a successful install plug the old drive back in
and see what
you can recover. On the problem drive do not run scandisk. It makes data
almost
totally unrecoverable.
