There are two options for this as far as the technology is concened.
Maybe three.

1- Evolution of current cellular systems: This is what we have so far
around the country and in Europe. It provides mobility but the data
rates should be limited.

2- IEEE 802.20 based products: This will take a *long time* to appear
in the market.

3- IEEE 802.16d/e products, or so called wimax
(http://www.wimaxforum.org). The duality between .11 and WiFi is the
same as the duality between .16 and Wimax. Fixed wireless access
products (.16a/d) are expected to be in the marked in the first or
second quarter of 2005. Mobile wireless will take a longer because the
standard is still in development.

I know Nextel provides a similar service to mobile wman (.16e) in
Raleigh, NC. But their product is propriatery, so I dont think it will
spread as fast as 16d or 16e expected.

A litte note:
IEEE 802.11a/b/g: wireless lan, or wifi
IEEE 802.16a/d/e: wireless man, or wimax. .16e is the mobile one which
is backward compatible with .16d.
