is branded and if you decide to change providers or travel outside the USA you
can not just pop in a SIM card in order to switch providers.

That is the big advantage of GSM/GPRS/EDGE as a international standard if your
radio is not branded you just swap out the SIM card with one on the
local network
and you are good to go, when I was in Nigeria that is exactly what I
did with both
my c-phone (also a GSMGPRS phone) and my data card. My call cost went from
$3/min to less than $1/min for calls to the USA from there. (Your
international roam
will eat you alive if you use it cheaper just to get a SIM in the
country you are at)

Indeed when you travel through Europe you will find that they sell the
cards right
at the point of entry into the country.
