[SLUG] Gnome/Metacity mouse weirdness

OK, I have a newly installed machine here, and the mouse is acting
somewhat erratically, sort of a tamed down version of what happens
when you select the wrong mouse protocol. Basically, the system is
usable, but occasionally the pointer will jump to the edge of the
screen, or some phantom clicks will register in a weird location.

I'm thinking the problem is either Gnome(2.8) or Metacity, because I
don't have this problem if I mouse around in GDM. I'm going to
install some more WMs and see if the problem is resolved, so hopefully
I can just run a different VM inside of Gnome, which I'd really like
to keep on this machine.

Any suggestions?

Yes, I tried changing the protocol in the XF86Config.
No, GPM is not running.
