It can be writable or not. Making it read-only prohibits hackers from
somehow hacking your permanent configuration. Making it writable allows
you to alter your configuration as needed.
I think the problem is that Coyote has never set the distro up to run
from anything other than a floppy. So it's tweaked in that direction.
