The Jargon File 4.3.1 (29 JUN 2001) says:

"Common: number sign; pound; pound sign; hash; sharp; crunch hex; [mesh].
Rare: grid; crosshatch; octothorpe; flash; , pig-pen; tictactoe;
scratchmark; thud; thump; splat"

I refer to the act of changing this:

do_something

to this:

# do_something

as "commenting it out", whether I use # or ! or ; or some odd character.
"Comment" has fewer syllables than either "number sign" or "exclamation
point" or "semicolon".

That's probably up to the font designers, BICBW.
