So, specifically, you have asked two questions.

Your answers in a nutshell: 1. Yes, I have an inordinate amount of
experience with the Phaser 860. 2. The best way, to access your network
printer, is through the network. Plenty has been written in regard to
postscript printers ,like the Phaser 860, and any other printer for that
matter, here: http://linuxprinting.org so there is no need for me to
rewrite it all for you. ;-)
