The important one of /dev/par* doesn't exist?

I have:

crw------- 1 root root 6, 1 Aug 30 2002 /dev/par1
crw------- 1 root root 6, 2 Aug 30 2002 /dev/par2
crw------- 1 root root 6, 3 Aug 30 2002 /dev/par3
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 99, 0 Aug 30 2002 /dev/parport0
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 99, 1 Aug 30 2002 /dev/parport1
crw------- 1 root root 99, 16 Sep 5 23:39 /dev/parport16
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 99, 2 Aug 30 2002 /dev/parport2
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 99, 3 Aug 30 2002 /dev/parport3
crw------- 1 root root 99, 32 Sep 5 23:39 /dev/parport32
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 99, 4 Aug 30 2002 /dev/parport4
crw------- 1 root root 99, 48 Sep 5 23:39 /dev/parport48
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 99, 5 Aug 30 2002 /dev/parport5
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 99, 6 Aug 30 2002 /dev/parport6
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 99, 7 Aug 30 2002 /dev/parport7

/dev/par? should be /dev/lp? (VMware copes with it), and
/usr/src/linux-2.4.26/Documentation/devices.txt says:
  6 char Parallel printer devices
                  0 = /dev/lp0 Parallel printer on parport0
...
 99 char Raw parallel ports
                  0 = /dev/parport0 First parallel port

{parport,ppdev}.{ko,o} isn't loaded?
