[SLUG] reading CDs or DVDs in a writer

OK. I have a DVD reader 'Pioneer DVD-ROM ATAPIModel DVD-115 0111,
FwRev=E1.11' which is at /dev/hdd and works fine. I also have a DVD writer
'_NEC DVD_RW ND-2510A, FwRev=2.15', which is at /dev/hdc, plus I use
ide-scsi with it (I'm on 2.4.26). I can write to it (SCSI ID 0,0,0), but I
cannot read from it. When I try:

[root@pc dev]# mount hdc /mnt/temp -o ro
mount: hdc is not a valid block device

which I expected, as it's a "SCSI" device now.

[root@pc dev]# mount scd0 /mnt/temp -o ro
mount: scd0 is not a valid block device

and there's a CD in it, one that the other drive mounted just fine.

[root@pc dev]# ls -l hdc scd0
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 0 Dec 10 21:48 hdc
brw------- 1 eben disk 11, 0 Aug 30 2002 scd0

"scd*" is the other (old?) name for "sr*". I don't see that any other
software has it open:

[root@pc dev]# lsof | grep scd
[root@pc dev]#

What can I do to make this drive read discs?

Unix is user-friendly; it's just picky about who it makes friends with.
