My recommended books for C/C++:
The C Programming Language by Kernighan and Ritchie
Object-Oriented Programming in C++ by Lafore

If you want to become a good programmer I would also recommend
learning a scripting language. Perl, Python, PHP, etc... It doesn't
matter, the Oreilly books are great, and there are excellent tutorials
online.

Overall the best way to become a better programmer is by doing it. So
find a project to help on or make one up yourself.
