I had added the wrong options in my fstab for the root filesystem, which
caused it to fail and mount read-only. This happened at the
checkroot.sh script. I'm both embarrassed it happened in the first
place and happy I was able to logically recreate the problem from the
ground up. Thanks for all your help everyone.
