Thank you John,

I had seen this and tried it, but appearantly I have a combination of
needs and this is one.

I found through a lot of reboots that I need both this boot option and
to disable the "speed step" technology on the processor in the BIOS. I
started by shutting down all of the BIOS options and by adding all of
the boot options that I had seen as possible culprits, then one at a
time backing those all out until only these two are left. Neither by
themselves did the trick, but with the two combined I am up and running.

Many thanks to all who contributed. All of the ideas were helpful in
tracking it down and all were very much appreciated!!
