Slackware includes a great boot manager ever since 9.0, I use it for all
my old machines that have no CD boot options.

Make a floppy with the following image and boot up your computer with
it. It will allow you to select what drive (HD, CD, etc) to boot from.
It also has an install option, which like you pointed out is nice on
older machines.

ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-9.1/rootdisks/sbootmgr.dsk
