Can you get the netapplet 1.0 applet for Ubuntu (it's for Gnome)? It
autodetects and configures everything and only shows the usable
unencrypted (as well as encrypted) networks. When you click on the bar
for the network, netapplet activates that network after about 15-30
seconds and shows a graphical link strength icon. Because of netapplet,
I've switched back to Gnome from KDE for wireless cafe loitering.
