[SLUG] 4.1 woes

I borrowed a Logitech 4.1 (quad + sub) set from my friend, and it sounds
great, except: I cannot consistently get 2-channel PCM sound (MP3s most
WAVs/AIFFs, some DVDs) to copy the front speaker data to the rear.
Actually I haven't tried a DVD yet, but I'm assuming it's the same.
"Consistently" because I swear I had it working once (or some simulated
surround sound from the front went to the rear, and that's close enough),
but /etc/asound.state (the mixer settings) got damaged, and it's too big
for me to easily parse just off the bat.

I use ALSA 1.0.5, and have a Soundblaster Live! 5.1.

Has anybody got this working?

Two atoms are walking along. Suddenly, one stops. The other says, "What's wrong?" "I've lost an electron." "Are you sure?" "I'm positive!"
