Thanks all, I got it. The problem was finding the man page processing piece.
i.e. man-db, indeed I have enough manpages on that poor machine now that
it will probably be muttering things during the night.... But now I
have the piece
needed and it is back working great.

Hey you really learn a lot more when you "break and fix" than when you just
cruse along and have it all done for you.
