Your plight reminds me of something I just did. I support a friend's
Debian box and let him go out and buy any HP or Epson printer figuring I
could get it to work whatever it was. Bastard bought a new all-in-one
CX-4600 which the newest gutenprint supports printing for (pardon my
dangling gerund). Well I got it to work perfectly with another epson
driver that was in gimp-print and with a modified hotplug script. Just
found out today another of his friends formerly using Windows was
frequently dropping by his house to use the Debian box because his was
taken down by virii.
