Yes the partitions will be gone but all you are doing is writing zero's
over zero's. more than one pass is useless.

This is still a zero fill. These are o.k. for cleaning your own drive
but if you're giving the box away and want to put a reasonable effort
into wiping your data (without overdoing it) then Chris Lee's suggestion
is the best.

This appears to have several types of multipass formatting. One even
looks like it makes seven passes of random data!! Runs from a bootable
cd or floppy. Also looks like it is used by the Department of Energy.
This tool looks like it will do the best job for a home user. And it's
GPL.
