colinux is a set of kernel patches to the linux kernel
that allow it to run as a native Windows application.
So you can run any x86 Linux binaries within the
colinux environment. That is not the case with
cygwin. The binaries need to be compiled specifically
for cygwin.

On both platforms you can have full X support, though
I think it is better with cygwin. When I say full, I
mean full GNOME or full KDE or full Enlightenment or
whatever. It just may take some compiling of special
packages.

I believe that the later cygwin installs will even
install icons and stuff for dealing with X windows.

In regards to you being "new to this stuff", which
stuff are you referring to? Linux under Windows?
