Gamin is a file and directory monitoring system defined to be a subset
of the FAM (File Alteration Monitor) system. This is a service provided
by a library which allows to detect when a file or a directory has been
modified.
There are numerous reports of it spinning and eating CPU.

This found by a simple google.
The "solution" appears to be installing a recent development version of
gamin.
FAM has pretty much been replaced by dnotify/inotify in recent kernels..
at some point all of this filesystem change stuff will work itself into
all of these desktop environments.
