That would be what us old people call an "Installfest."
I think it would be great for SLUG to have a nice big one at a central
location in the near future, but SFD is not one except peripherally.
This is an informational event where polite, nicely-dressed people set
up a table in a well-trafficed location where they demonstrate Linux and
explain to The Masses why they should use it -- and mention that there
is this local group they can join that will give them friendly help
getting started with their new OS and has regular meetings at
(date/time/place).
In this context, nametags are more important than penguin suits.
A well-organized regional installfest could/would/should be sponsored by
a distro publisher that would supply CDs, signage, and other necessities
in return for appropriate promotional mention. Or perhaps by Prentice
Hall, which publishes lots of Linux books. I know all their marketing
people, could almost certainly get them on board with this, make it into
a real hoopla at one of the bigger Barnes & Nobles.
But let's get through SFD first, okay?
