You are misunderstanding the purpose of my test. It wasn't to test my email
server. It was to test my subscription to the SLUG list.

If my POP3 server went down, there is a possibility of my email address being
*ns*bscribed from the list due to excessive bounces. That being the case, I
would still need to test my subscription, post/receive, if I hadn't received
any emails from the list. Since the last email I received from the list was
from the afternoon of 08/23, I couldn't tell if I was still subscribed. I
could probe Majordomo, but this is a true test.
