Well, you're assuming that
1. The RJ-45 jack expects a plug that connects to Cat 5 cabling (could be
Cat 5e or Cat 6; I assume there were categories 1-4, but I never heard
of them)
2. that port supplies ethernet (I believe token ring uses the same
connector, BICBW)
OTOH, those are usually valid assumptions, considering Cat {5e,6} are
backward-compatible, TR's all but extinct, and 10/100 NICs are very common
on mobos.
