I have in my computer's /etc/modules.conf

post-install snd-emu10k1 /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
pre-remove snd-emu10k1 /usr/sbin/alsactl store

(replace "snd-emu10k1" with the name of your sound module, and check the
location of alsactl)

Many distros now have you add stuff to some other file, and then run a
script to update /etc/modules.conf.
