I wasn't aware of this--thanks for the tip! (Fortunately, I'm not cursed
with AOL but it is nice to know that a solution exists for Linux users.

That article refers to an AOL client called PengAOL. The last release
appears to be from October, 2002. The project is here:

I decided to do a little investigating and I found some other options as
well.

There is a fork of the previous project (although it is apparently written
from scratch) that is called Penggy. Its latest release appears to be from
2003:

There is a GUI (perl-TK) wrapper for Penggy available here:

Linspire has also released an AOL client (which appears to be based on
Penggy but I'm not sure). It looks like it uses Qt.
