The most recent Future Music mag has their definition
of it. As Donald mentioned, the cilia in the middle
can be broken by very loud sounds. The symptoms are
usually a high pitched ringing. You get it after
being at a loud club or concert, but usually there it
is temporary. Continuous loud noises can make it
permanent.

They give some websites:
American Tinnitus Association: ata.org
Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers (H.E.A.R):
hearnet.com
