Any of the O'Reilly books are generally pretty good. Really though there is
a wealth of excellent information to be had on the net. You probably know
about The Linux Documentation Project http://www.tldp.org/ already. If not,
check it out.

For rolling your own there is Linux From Scratch
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ which could be a bit daunting for some. At
least for the maintenance. However, you can learn a lot just from reading
about it. Check out Gentoo http://www.gentoo.org/ as well (I have a server
and laptop running that) which uses Emerge for system/application updates.
There may be others. Those are the ones I know about.

Programming, hmm. What kind? C? Shell Scripting? Assembler? (My favorite :p)
I haven't coded in a while but I'll throw some suggestions out:

Linux Shell Scripting with Bash - Ken Burtch
The C Programming Language - Kernighan & Ritchie (A classic)
The UNIX Programming Environment - Brian Kernighan
The Art of UNIX Programming - Eric S. Raymond
Advanced Programming in the UNIX(R) Environment - W. Richard Stevens
(Another classic)

Oh, and don't forget the ever useful man command. :)
