That, or the version of mplayer you have is crippled and can't play DVDs.
Now that you know the correct device to use, go ahead and try the others.
But I'd check the device permissions first; that's an easy fix. If it works
for root but not for an ordinary user, that's an indicator of a permissions
problem somewhere.

But why do you have the DVD drive on the primary IDE bus, and the hard
drives on the secondary? Not that it's inefficient (AFAIK), just weird.
