Yes, that's probably the best way to go.

You're stuck with the older 7174 drivers, though, if you're running Stable.
The newer drivers, at least in Sid, require a recent version of nvidia-glx
which you'd also have to pull from Sid, along with most of Sid. If you
don't plan on playing games it probably doesn't matter, though. 7174 has
been stable for me for a year.
