FreeNX is the only thing I can think of. It's useless for my needs, since
it isn't capable of sharing out the running display / framebuffer (all I
ever want to do), but it's supposed to be quite fast for instantiating new
sessions.

Of course, if you need to hit :0, FreeNX is quite useless...
