Yes, it's a binary. It installs to /opt and is as permanent as any other
app. It updates the symlinks so that your menu and icon are automatically
redirected to the new version and even copies over your bookmarks and
preferences.

Where does it put the firefox/ dir, wherever you happen to be at the time?
Is its location temporary or permanent? I didn't see a compilation step, so
what's downloaded must already be compiled.
