If the box is new enough to support ACPI, then you can verify/configure
your distribution to shut down "normally" when the power button is
pressed among other things.

When I was doing consulting work, this was a huge problem in a number
of customers (prior to ACPI). What I routinely did is disable the power
button in some cases and I would show them that they can press the
monitor's power button to turn off their computer. Worked like a charm.
No more corruption, no more problems...all were happy campers and they
were shocked at how fast their computer started up in the mornings!
