Yes.. That's exactly what I meant when I wrote that there's a problem in connecting
an 8 conductor wire to a standard RJ11 phone jack. Presumably people would drop four
of the connections and use the proper pairs a la standard ethernet. I've seen it
mentioned often enough that it sounds like one of those things that seem to make
sense but probably is a misunderstanding of the technology. I.e., the belief that
twisted pair works for ethernet, therefore it will work for phone lines.

Possibly from the outside jack to the wall outlet this may help, but all phone
wiring I've seen is standard 4-wire silver phone line. This accounts for the
majority of the house wiring. The phone line from jack to my DSL modem is about
three feet. The run from the outside box is close to 60 feet (other side of the
house). I can't see how CAT5 from jack to modem will help at all.
